After the success of Roots Manuva's 'Go Bananas!' night at The Book Club, the legendary UK bass-head is taking it to the next level with 'Dub College' at The Queen of Hoxton. Launching on July 23rd, this exploration of what Mr Manuva describes as "bass culture" will kick off with a meeting of artists from his longtime home, Big Dada, and his own label/gang, Banana Klan. Less a clash than a meeting of minds, the night will feature Big Dada artists old and new alongside the cream of the Banana Klan.
Mixing it up over two floors will be Jammer, celebrating the release of his debut album, 'Jahmanji', the Illersapiens bringing their completely live take on the UK hip hop blueprint; Scots beat-blaster Offshore will be hammering out the Cale-Funk and Ahmos dropping sharp lyrics in a classic North West London flow; DELS will be showcasing some of the Joe Hot Chip-produced electronic hip hop which has already seen him described as a Roots Manuva for a new generation and Oliver Night, a sometime member of Roots' band, the Banana Skinz, will be focussing on his dubstep-influenced floorfillers. Meanwhile Ricky Ranking will be bringing the beauty and the pain in the South London soundsystem way he has made his own and Big Dada will round out their bill with their longest serving and newest MCs, Birmingham's legendary Juice Aleem and Liverpool's Bang On. Throw the BK DJs into the mix, add the presence of our genial host, Rooty-Toot Manuva, and you have an evening of the very finest entertainment.
Book early, come in, expect bottom-end business. |

Roots Manuva presents: Go Bananas: Dub College, 23 April, London |

Bananaklan, the creative collective founded by Roots Manuva, are presently engaged in a series of off-kilter showcase events. The events function primarily as a testing ground for a vast catalogue of songs, art and DJ/ selecta talent of past, present and future Manuva collaborators. Over ten years of varied tour line ups and band shapes have fed a hunger within Roots and his collaborators for a club residency with a back-to-grass-roots feeling. A celebration of all things in Bass Culture with random splashes of theatre, live installation and film.
Over the past eight years, Bananaklan has delivered into the world a variety of seven inches, mixtapes, podcasts and events have run along side the more finely tuned Ninja tune/ Big Dada Roots Manuva record releases. All things BK are community-related, heart-breakingly self-financed and bear a full reflection of worth, passion and accidental underground chic. After the accidental success of Roots Manuva's 09 birthday bash (held at the Macbeth, Hoxton, London) it was clear that there was a space in clubland for a regular event that brought all walks of life and music genres together in an eclectic DIY stance with a head nod to punk and cottage creative industries.
Go Bananas: Dub College is a journey into mutant hip hop/ jazz/ reggae experimentations. Drawing from a pool of four different touring bands, the Bananaklan collective has too many members to keep up with and has often been described as a gang. I am fully aware that i have been one of a lucky few that can get fully indulged in this highly treacherous water of maintaining a serious creative career and bridging the fine line of art for art sake and paying the rent. Driven by a pig headed passion about creativeness for un self conscience reasons. We are truly inspired by american and jamaican sonic culture but truthfully dare to present the art form from a British tilt. In the spirit of sound system Dub plate manipulation we venture into the domain of future digital multi media application: part social and youth out reach, part fringe theatre, part anti establishment and generally an all round fight to leave a loud and proud statement in history books.
An ever morpthing componant of the Roots Manuva Live entity Bananaklan will convene on 23 April for further
Dub study at the Book Club. Expect an eclectic maze of phonic detail: a friendly clash of DJ super star: dj MK Kiss FM, Dizzee Rascal, Fun House and the Bananaklan all star Band. Two floors of revolving delight Laptop selection upstairs, live band and turntables downstairs.
Live Jam session featuring new material from Bananaklan: 8 piece band and guest recitals: Ricky Ranking, Amaziree, Roots Manuva as Hylton Goshington
DJ's/ Selectors: Dj Mk, Dj Jawa, Photo Machine, The Bpm Brownwood recording, Dj diabilo and Lucy Pink |

COMPETITION: Win tickets to see ROOTS MANUVA at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Session with The Hospital Club, London
That's right folks, this one's a bit proper. Rodney is one of the first artists to play at the newly conceived, televised and generally quite exciting Mercury Prize Sessions. The even takes place at The Hospital Club, Covent Garden, on Thursday 12th November. Also on the line-up is the excellent Metronomy, and we have 25 pairs of tickets to give away.
All you need to enter is to be free at 6.45pm that evening, to be over 18 (and have proof) and to be able to answer this question. What was the name of the single that Metronomy produced on the last Roots Manuva album, Slime and Reason?
If you know the answer, email info@bigdada,com with the subject line 'ROOTS MANUVA COMP,' and try to do it quick smart.
Good luck! |
